Social and Community Participation – Community, Social and Recreational Activities

SA Disability Care understands the importance of being able to enjoy your favourite social activities. Maintaining your lifestyle and social interactions play a key role in sustaining a good quality of life and empowering you to strive for independence and connection.

We know that communities shape us and recognise the importance of connection and social interaction. Our support workers can help you get to events and gatherings that will increase community participation and help you meet like-minded individuals to form connections with.

Recreation and leisure are an important aspect of maintaining a good quality of life and can be a vital part of skill development.

Through our social and community participation supports, you can:

  • Join a social or community group
  • Enjoy family events and celebrations
  • Receive assistance to complete your shopping
  • Enjoy hobbies and interests, or discover new ones
  • Develop your social skills
  • Catch up with friends
  • Participate in sports
  • Attend recreational activities (e.g. visit the beach, see a movie, or visit the library)
  • Go on a holiday

These supports can be provided in a centre or community setting and provided individually, or within a group.

Social activities currently available

We run day programs from our venue in Salisbury, South Australia.  Participants enjoy a range of individualised, varied and culturally appropriate activities, including arts and crafts, culturally themed days, guest performers, BBQs, creative wellness and reablement programs, indoor games and movie screenings.

Culturally appropriate services for CALD communities

95% percent of our support workers, volunteers and key administrative staff are bilingual or multilingual and many have volunteered for many years in leadership roles for a range of Bhutanese, Burmese, Indian, Afghan, Cambodian, African and Nepali Community groups.

We are actively engaged with local community and community organisations, such as AMES Australia, Australian Refugee Association, Bhutanese Australia Association of SA, and the Lyell McEwin Volunteer Association. We meet regularly with these referring organisations to discuss the changing needs of new arrivals to Australia, as well as those transitioning out of settlement services.
